Last week, Tom Berkedal shared information about a Fox Valley based group called “Voices of Men,” that engages men and boys in the process of reducing acts of domestic assault and sexual violence.
Voices of Men had its beginning in 2007 when the leaders of the four agencies in the Fox Valley dealing with domestic assault and sexual violence issues, had a discussion centered on the fact that they were all women, their staff members were all women, and about 85% of their donors and volunteers were women. And yet, they knew that approximately 90% of the perpetrators of domestic assault and sexual violence are men. The question they asked themselves that day was “Where are the men?” They spent the next few years working with about 40 local men to organize what was to become“Voices of Men” and ultimately decided to have an annual breakfast that would inform men and boys about the issues regarding domestic assault and sexual violence, and inspire them to be involved in the solution.
The breakfast has grown significantly over the past 6 years, and the last two in 2015 and 2016 sold out the largest banquet facility in Appleton, and had over 1000 attendees. The breakfast event has also provided growth for the organization through the efforts of men and boys who have attended, and decided to do more. As a result, several groups that were inspired by Voices of Menhave been formed in various high schools, colleges, a middle school, grade school, and several local businesses. Visit www.voicesofmen.com if you’d like to read more about the organization.
Tom announced that he is in the process of informing various La Crosse agencies and organizations about“Voices of Men,” and plans to form a second chapter of the group in La Crosse when he retires next year and moves back to the area. If you’d be interested in being involved with the formation of the La Crosse chapter of “Voices of Men” please email Tom at tberkedal55@gmail.com

Our Youth Exchange Student for the 2017-18 year is Rebeca from Parana, Brazil. We welcomed her last week at Rotary to our club. Rebeca's first host family is Jeff and Karla Fennie. Rebeca will be going to Logan High School.
We are still looking for the "second host family." Rebeca will be attending Logan High School. If you are interested or know of someone who might be, please contact Jack Haase for more information. You do not need to be a Rotarian to host Rebeca.
At little insight on Rebeca...she is a member of a Interact Club...she enjoys being part of something that serves humanity. She enjoys watching movies, reading books, taking pictures, meeting new places and going out with her family, usually at a park to play volley. She intends to do an undergraduate course in cinema and work in film directing. She chose this path when she was in 9th grade while doing theater in school.

On behalf of Viterbo University’s D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership, we cordially invite you to attend a private reception for the local Rotary chapters with artist Terese Agnew featuring her latest work Writing in Stone. The Writing in Stone exhibit takes viewers through towering monuments, painted as if by the soot of ages. The monument sculptures serve as an evolving stage set for a multi-media experience that incorporates "living statues," oral history, sound recordings, and opportunities for the audience to contribute to a message of hope and perseverance.

Rotary Friendship Exchange...The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their families the opportunity to host and visit Rotarians around the world. In addition to experiencing other cultures and making lasting friendships, an exchange provides a strong foundation for carrying out other international activities and service projects. The primary goal of a Friendship Exchange is to build greater international understanding and goodwill among Rotarians and their families. In addition, exchange participants can learn how their vocations are practiced in other parts of the world, observe new customs and cultures, and promote an appreciation of cultural diversity worldwide.
