Dean McHugh, from the Rotary Club of Holmen, serves as Governor of District 6250 for 2016-17 and will be our speaker this week. Join us in welcoming Dean to our club and see what exciting things he has planned for our District this year.
Dean began in Rotary as a charter member of his club in 2007 and is a Past President. He has also served as Foundation Annual Programs Chair for District 6250. Dean initially joined Rotary to help give others the experience he received as a foreign exchange student to Bogota, Colombia. He was chosen to be his club’s International Service chair and encouraged by his charter President to find a signature international project for his club. Dean realized his water quality training and Spanish language abilities would be helpful for clean water projects in Latin America. He has made three visits to Peru along with his club’s clean water team where they monitor ongoing projects and evaluate additional opportunities. He has made Rotary contacts throughout the world to learn about and cooperatively promote clean water and sanitation.
This month Rotarian Andy Bakkum is program chair. He has lined up five women to do "Rotarians in the News" and we will be having DOUBLE FINES for the month of September. There will be two baskets and all donations in the second basket will go to New Horizons in La Crosse. What a great way to support one of our local agencies in need. Even if you are not in the news your donations are welcomed!
Red Basket - If you find someone in the news...bring the paper and put it in the red basket located on the registration table. Those doing Rotarians in the news will check the basket prior to the meeting and will include in their news.
Program Last week was "Merchandizing in Human Flesh." Guest speaker was Marlene Weisenbeck, FSPA - Convener of La Crosse Task Force to Eradicate Modern Slavery. Marlene was a member of White House Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships which studied this topic at the request of President Obama (July 2012-December 2013); Participant in the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Sciences and Social Sciences Conference in November 2013; Member of U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking, Inc., and member, Wisconsin anti-Human Trafficking Task Force since December 2015.
We are teaming up with the Riverfest Commodores with a fundraiser. They are selling raffle tickets to benefit their Riverfest Commodore Foundation, Inc....each ticket is $10....every ticket we sell we will get $5.......1st Place is Four Club Seats to the Packers/Dallas game on October 16th...includes a 6 passenger limo service to and from the game.....2nd - 5th price click here to view.We hope you will not only buy a ticket but take a pack of tickets to sell to your friends, co-workers, etc. We will use the money through-out the year for our projects. A side note is that the Packers will honor Bret Favre for his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction and unveil his name in the ring of honor on the Lambeau Field facade during halftime at this game! Our Rotary Youth Exchange Student for 2016-17 is Simran, a 16 year-old girl from India. Please welcome her to her first meeting this week, September 1st. On September 8th you will learn more about her because she will be our program that day.
We are excited to sponsor Simran while she is here. She likes to read, watch movies, cycle and draw. Simran is vice president of her school's Interact Club. She wishes to be a psychiatrist. Simran will be attending Central High School Simran arrived Monday and was greeted by some Rotarians and host family members. Her first host family will be the Scott and Laurie Neader family ....second will be the Lisa Herr family and third will be the David Kilpatrick family.
Please give Simran a warm welcome and open up your hearts and homes to her.
Remember we are ALL her host families while she is here...if you have a special outing or family gathering that you think she would enjoy....invite her!

Rotary Youth Exchange A Step Toward WorldUnderstanding. The La Crosse area Rotary Clubs are looking for students who are interested in a unique experience of attending high school while living in another Rotary International country. Rotary International has a program which annually involves over 10,000 high school students living nearly a year in another country. Candidates must be sophomores to seniors in high school at the time of application and 16-18 1/2 years old when they leave for their assigned country. Applicants must rank in the upper half of their class.
How to apply. If you know of someone that is interested in this program for the 2017-18 school year, simply have them complete and return the application. Click here for application and more information. An informational meeting will be September 15, 2016, 6:30 pm at the Children's Museum, 207 5th Avenue, La Crosse. Preliminary application due, September 15, 2016. Local interviews will be September 26, 2016 and final application due October 12, 2016. District interviews will be held on November 6, 2016 in Baraboo.
The next two District 6250 Friendship exchanges, Nepal in October and Philippines early next year, are completely booked. But our district friendship exchange coordinator sends the following about the possibility for an India exchange in 2017:
I just received a message from Gujarat, India. They have six couples interested in traveling to our district in May and June of 2017. They would like us to travel to their district next year the last ten days of January, finishing on February 3-5 at their district conference. We can do this, since district funds are not needed to fund these trips. Travelers pay their air fare, first hotel night and perhaps rental cars. Hosts support the visitors with room, board, entertainment and perhaps transportation.
My question to this group is to see what you think of this exchange. If you would like to do it, spread the word and see if there is anyone in your club that would like to participate. Travelers can expect to travel from January 21 - February 5, 2017.
West Africa Project Fair...Includes Polio Eradication Activities....October 18-26, 2016. This week-long trip is a hands-on experience in polio eradication, community service, friendships and learning how to support the Rotary projects of West Africa.

Birthday, Wedding, Sympathy, Get Well, Anniversary, Congratulations, Note Cards and other cards will be available. All cards are unique and hand-made. Thank you cards are only $1.00, as are the note cards, which are blank inside. The regular cards are $2.00 and $3.00 each. Some cards are three for $5.00 and some three for $10. Anita donates all sales to the Rotary Works Foundation! Last quarter she donated $210 for the 2nd quarter card sales. Y-T-D sales are $450.00. Thank you to all who supports Anita's fundraiser for the Rotary Works Foundation.

Honorary Membership is offered to members who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals. Honorary membership is the highest distinction that a club may bestow and should be conferred only in exceptional cases. Honorary members cannot propose new members to the club or hold office and are exempt from attendance requirements and club dues. Honorary members will continue to receive The Rotarian Magazine compliments of the club.
Excused Membershipis offered to members if the aggregate of the member’s years of age and years of membership in one or more clubs is 85 years or more, the member has been a member of one or more clubs for at least 20 years, and the member has notified the club's secretary in writing of the member’s desire to be excused from attendance and the board has approved. Excused Members will pay the quarterly dues of $70 and only for meals when they attend a meeting.
Membership Proposals....we will no longer ask for three references when you propose a new member. This was a criteria that our club had set not RI. This will help us process new members into our club more efficiently. You can access the membership proposal form online, under the Club Information site page.
