Thanks to Sarah Arendt-Beyer you can now view past Zoom Rotary Meetings - she will post each week on our web site......LINK.

New Members:  We will be welcoming three new members to our club this week: Justin Boge, Travis Bordeau and Katy Wood.

This Week at Rotary:  Our speaker will be Dr. Bob Gleeson.

Dr. Bob Gleeson
Covid-19

Dr. Bob Gleeson is an internist who spent 27 years as Medical Director doing medic-actuarial work for Northwestern Mutual and then ten years as an Associate Professor at The Medical College of Wisconsin.  He first became involved in pandemic studies as part of the risk management work for Northwestern Mutual (e.g., SARS and Avian flu).   He has continued this work with Covid-19.  His March 2020 talk to Milwaukee Rotary has been viewed over 1800 times on YouTube.  He has also done a recent Covid-19 update to Milwaukee Rotary and two programs on Covid-19 for UWM’s Osher LifeLong Learning Institute.

Dr. Bob will address seven common questions with a focus on personal and economic best practices:

  1. I’m ready for this to be over.  What is the status of covid right now?  Nationally, in Wisconsin, and here in LaCrosse?   If this were a baseball game, what inning would we be in?
  2. I thought summer heat was supposed to stop this infection.  What and why is this happening?
  3. I understand that once we have a vaccine, we can quickly return to normal life.  Is that right?  How close are we to a vaccine?   Is there any other vaccine I can take to help me?
  4. I worry about getting sick with covid.  Are we closer to a treatment?
  5. I want to safe but also live my life and be social.  How can I be pandemic practical?
  6. I’m confused.  Please talk to me about what to do that is safe and what is not safe when I am out and about.
  7. I have a business to run and I’m losing money right now.  What can we do to open the economy faster?

THANK YOU FROM OUR SPEAKER BRETT

Thank you so very much for allowing me the chance to present to the Rotary Club of La Crosse this afternoon (Thursday, June, 18th). We are grateful for the opportunity we have, at the Skygen International Foundation, to bring the gift of better vision to the poor and underserved population of Tanzania, Africa. It is a wonderful thing to be able to share the story of our foundation’s work with organization’s like Rotary who are committed to providing humanitarian services and helping build goodwill and peace throughout the world.

I normally leave a small stack of 5x7 info cards after an in-person presentation, providing information to anyone who might wish to learn more about the foundation, offer support or donate. Since we are virtually meeting and presenting, I have attached a virtual copy of our postcard to this email if you wish to include in your Clubrunner newsletter or share with the members. Our website, https://skygenfoundation.org, provides a wealth of information about our work and impact in Tanzania, including: Photos, Videos, Testimonials, Press Releases and Blogs about the Foundation.

Here also is a direct link (click on picture below) to the short Skygen video clip “Creating Brighter Futures” I played during my presentation (you may also share this):

Thank you again for the opportunity to speak to your club. If any of your members’ have follow-up questions or wish to contact me, do not hesitate to share my email with them (brett.bennett@skygenusa.com).

Associate Membership is a program to recruit younger members, millennials, to membership.  Associate Membership is available to anyone who is proposed for membership who is 35 years of age or less.  Associate membership will end when that member reaches the age of 38. They would pay for dues and $100 for meals per quarter no matter how many meetings they attend that quarter.

Corporate Membership is a program to allow multiple employees of a business Rotary participation under one primary membership. Each corporate membership is limited to a three-year term. After the three-year corporate membership term, the individuals are required to become individual members. View Corporate Membership Policy.

Family Membership is a program to allow a second individual Rotary participation under one primary membership.  View Family Membership Policy.

Honorary Membership  is offered to members who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals.Unlike other membership categories that can be requested by the member, Honorary Membership is bestowed upon a member by election from the Board of Directors.   View Honorary Membership Policy.

Excused Membership is offered to members if the aggregate of the member’s years of age and years of membership in one or more clubs is 85 years or more, the member has been a member of one or more clubs for at least 20 years, and the member has notified the club's secretary in writing of the member’s desire to be excused from attendance  and the board has approved.  Excused Members will pay the quarterly dues and only for meals when they attend a meeting.

Membership Proposals....we will no longer ask for three references when you propose a new member.  This was a criteria that our club had set not RI.  This will help us process new members into our club more efficiently.  You can access the membership proposal form online, under the Club Information site page.

AL LOUIS'S 2020 MUSKY CHALLENGE
“Al Louis’s 2020 Musky Challenge”

Thank you to all who submitted a request to be a part of the Musky Challenge Fundraiser.   The following will each receive $500 of the funds raised:  Mobile Meals - Guardian Angel Fund; Gateway Area Council, BSA - Fall Cub Camp; La Crosse Public Education Foundation - Random Acts of Kindness; and Family and Children's Center - Chrome Book Project.

The main recipient of the fund will go to New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Centers - Stewards of Children Training.

Starting July 26 through August 28,  Al will be fishing up at Lake Vermilion with the hopes of catching many Muskies. He is hoping to get out each Tuesday and Thursday night to chase Muskies for four hours each night. If all goes well he will get 10-12 trips during the dates listed.  It takes 10,000 casts to catch one Musky and last year Al was lucky enough to catch four.  Al is contributing $100 per Musky he catches during that time frame and challenging our members to match any $ amount towards each Musky.  If you want to challenge Al to $10 per Musky and he catches 7, your generous contribution of $70 would go towards the fund. You can also just donate a flat rate of any amount.  Last year we raised over $4,000 which went to The Parenting Place for the 2019 Diaper Drive.  Al’s minimum donation will be $500 and he will also be promoting this fundraiser at his honorary clubs in Arizona and Minnesota.  His Lake Havasu Club has already agreed to match up to $1,000.! Anyone donating $50 or more will receive a bronze Centennial coin.

You will be hearing more about the fundraiser and how you can sign-up to challenge Al and help five nonprofits in our community that support families, the elderly and children!

We received the following correspondence:

To the Rotary Lights Crew,

"Every winter my family and I so enjoy the lights in the park, which I am lucky enough to be able to enjoy every night just outside my window.  I want to thank your entire organization and your many volunteers for all the work you do to make it possible year after year.  I have enclosed a donation that I hope can help to sustain the future of Rotary Lights and the enjoyment it brings to the whole community. Thank you for creating a space that both figuratively and literally lights up my life."

WHEELS OF HOPE FUNDRAISER INFO

Thank you to  Rotarians Jodi Widuch and Mary Beth Hensel for presenting our "Wheels of Hope" project.   This is an international project that our club in cooperation with other Rotary Clubs has set a goal to raise money to fund a bus and a van to safely transport girls to their schools in Afghanistan.    LINK to PowerPoint Presentation.

Only 12% of women in Afghanistan are considered literate. The Zabuli Education Center is one of the few successful schools for girls that is working to change that sad statistic. The Wheels of Hope Project is an important support to expanding educational opportunities for girls and creating safety. This work is inspired by  Razia Jan, last year’s District Conference keynote speaker and founder of the school.
