This week Lyn Kenney will be our speaker....The Mouse that Roared: The history of women and Rotary since 1910.
Lyn grew up in a Navy family, attended high school in Japan and graduated from both the University of Florida and the University of Wisconsin-Madison for graduate school. Her career was in Health Care then Marketing. She retired as Marketing Manager for the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources, then worked 2 years in California with partners in their own company serving Correctional Industries.
Lyn has been active in Rotary since 1988 when she was one of the first 6 women in the Madison, Wisconsin Downtown Club of 500 members. She is a major donor and a Bequest Society Member. Her Rotary passions include international projects, Rotary history and mentoring Global Grant and Peace Fellow Scholars. Lyn recently completed an extensive historical documentation project to video record her interviews of the first woman Rotary Club President and the first 8 women DGs in Rotary. She wrote about this project in Sylvia Whitlock’s new book: “Women Also Serve” and it can be viewed online at Rotary Global History Fellowship.

This is one of the highest honors Rotary can bestow upon a person. Recipients are Rotarians and community professionals in recognition of their outstanding contributions, exemplifying the highest ideal in Rotary in placing 'Service Above Self." Paul Harris Fellow is a person who has contributed, or in whose name a contribution of $US1000 has been made, to the Annual Programs Fund and certain other programs of The Rotary Foundation. Recognition of a Paul Harris Fellow is an opportunity to show appreciation for a person, either Rotarian or non-Rotarian, who shares the values of the Foundation.

I believe David Amborn should be the 2016-17 Rotarian of the Year for our club because David Amborn lives the four way test in all that he does. He has overseen the downtown Fruit Basket fundraiser for years, offered his help with convention and every other Rotary need that is asked of him. He has the highest ethical standards and retired from Gundersen Lutheran Foundation after years of fundraising and community giving. He continues to serve the Community Theater, The Children's Museum and the Parenting Place in leadership positions, helping our community to be the best it can be. He has taken an active interest in exchange students in the past, making sure they get to community events and feel welcomed.
I can think of no one who is more deserving, who continues to be active in Rotary year after year, tirelessly and willingly accepting roles wherever needed.
David is currently serving on our Board of Directors and is our Sergeant-at-Arms. He is a past La Crosse Rotary Foundation President and Club President (2009-10).
David will be recognized at our July 6th meeting and the Avenues of Service Dinner on August 15th.
