PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:  09 August 2018

In celebration of August being Membership Month, this week’s message focuses on two key items.  First, please remember to invite a potential new member.  Most people need to be asked to join a new club.  To make the most of your efforts, keep in mind that the cost of 100 meals for potential guests has been prepaid, which has been done to make it easy for you to bring a guest.  While there will be no policing set up for this program, I do have a few asks.  If you use this money, please be sure that the guest is a true potential member that might join our club.  Also, if you have a company that reimburses your meals, please let this benefit be used by those who pay out of pocket to bring guests.  With this being our 100th anniversary, we should have plenty of exciting reasons for a guest to want to join our club.

Second, this week’s video link is from RI President Barry Rassin.  His message focuses on the need to make changes in our organization, and the importance of public image. "To serve our communities well, we need to represent our communities in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, and background. We need to start reaching out to people who may not know about Rotary." Watch Rassin's message to learn more about how you can help build Rotary's membership so we can be more effective People of Action.  It is only 2 minutes and 30 seconds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmbv4K1z8ts&feature=youtu.be

Mississippi Expedition for ShelterBox

Erik Elsea, President of Cape Coral, Florida Rotary Club and ShelterBox volunteer is canoeing the length of the Mississippi River to raise money for ShelterBox USA and raise awareness of the great work of Rotary along the route.  ShelterBox is a huge international partner of Rotary, speeding pre-positioned supplies to disaster scenes around the world.  It is without doubt a worthy cause.  Charity Navigator ranks them almost as high as the Rotary Foundation, with an overall rating of 95.8 and transparency rating of 100.  They get the highest rating of fours stars.

More information is on the following sites:

Our club and Valley View Rotary club hosted a ShelterBox Fundraiser Sunday at Pettibone Boat Club to welcome Erik to La Crosse.  Last week we had a donor give us a $500 match donation - we collected $315 in our baskets so we had raised $815.  After the fundraiser on Sunday we have collected over $1384.   Thank you to all who were there to welcome Erik and who donated to this worthy cause. Special thanks to the Radisson Hotel for giving Erik a comfortable nights rest on Sunday night!   See photos.

You can see Erik's progress on his Garmin tracker:

You can also donate online - please note it is for the Mississippi Expedition

THANK YOU FROM ERIK
Good Morning! First I want to thank everyone for your hospitality. You sure know how to make someone feel welcome. I appreciate all your efforts for raising money for ShelterBox and helping provide shelter, warmth and dignity to families on their worst day ever. Staying at the Radisson was pure luxury as well as having a hot shower and a real bed. I had the opportunity to explore a little of Lacrosse and meet some locals. I wish I could stay longer because this seems like a really fun town. I will definitely be back someday. Thanks again for everything and you can continue to follow along the journey at www.mississippiexpedition.com and our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MississippiExpedition/

Regards,
Erik

GROWING HEARTS ACROSS THE WORLD

Centennial Project Fundraiser - Growing Hearts Across the World.

Message from the Fundraising Committee: Lee Rasch, Kerstin Boudreau, Kenna Christians, Sue Durtsche, Mary Ann Gschwind, Chuck Hanson, Kathryn Sexauer, Mike Swenson, Jodi Widuch, Todd Restel, Katie Berkedal and Catherine Kolkmeier.

As you know, we are celebrating 100 years of Rotary service to our region with the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign. The campaign will culminate with the completion of the Cameroon Garden in Riverside Park in the summer of 2019. The Garden will honor the rich cultural traditions of Cameroon and provide a wonderful gathering place overlooking the area where the the “Three Rivers” meet. Most importantly, it will serve as a model for community and international service for the upcoming generations of Rotarians.

To date, we have received excellent support from Rotarians. But we have not yet heard from all of you. The next phase of the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign will be to the Seven Rivers Region community. It is very important to be able to state to the community at large that Rotarians are fully committed to Growing Hearts Across the World. Indeed, there is no better message than to state...every Rotarian in our Club contributed. We have asked members to consider a $100 contribution pledge for up to two years. However, your contribution at any level will count. Please turn in your pledge cards and contributions to Earlamae Dahlby or send your contribution to Lyn Sheffer at P.O. Box 1914, La Crosse, WI 54602-1914.

One hundred years of service by Rotary has had a profound impact on the lives of many in our region and throughout the world. Come join us in celebrating this service...and help set the stage for generations of Rotarians in the years to come.

We have dedicated a page on our web site for our Centennial year to keep members updated on our project.  Click here to view.

If you would like more information, please contact Lee Rasch.

ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE

Rotary Friendship Exchange...The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their families the opportunity to host and visit Rotarians around the world. In addition to experiencing other cultures and making lasting friendships, an exchange provides a strong foundation for carrying out other international activities and service projects. The primary goal of a Friendship Exchange is to build greater international understanding and goodwill among Rotarians and their families. In addition, exchange participants can learn how their vocations are practiced in other parts of the world, observe new customs and cultures, and promote an appreciation of cultural diversity worldwide.
