Jail Program Coordinator Mike Kiefer and Clinical Therapist Ben Pfiffner highlighted a number of the individual and group programs currently provided in the La Crosse County Jail, including:
Mental health services,
High school study and completion,
Higher education,
Cognitive behavioral intervention groups,
Religious services,
Life skills (such as parenting and personal finance),
Exercise/recreation,
Project Proven, and
Voting While Incarcerated (recently named a model program by the League of Women Voters).

Welcome to Week 1 of RI’s Basic Education & Literacy Month.
As millions of children all over the globe are returning to school for a new academic year, it pays to remember that more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population. The goal of Rotary International is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. The Rotary Foundation supports education for all children and literacy for children and adults through scholarships, donations, and service projects around the world. Some of the ways TRF is helping improve basic education and literacy all around the world include, among numerous others:
Opening schools: In Afghanistan, Rotarians opened a girls’ school to break the cycle of poverty and social imbalance.
Teacher Training: Through TRF, Rotarians share their knowledge and experience with educators and other professionals who work with vulnerable populations.
Teaching adults to read: Rotary members in the United States partnered with
ProLiteracy Detroit to recruit and train tutors after a study showed that more than half of the local adult population was functionally illiterate. Over 500 adults raised their reading levels by three grades during the program.
Making schools healthy: Rotarians are providing clean, fresh water to every public
school in Lebanon so students can be healthier and get a better education. So far, at least $100million has been spent by TRF to get clean water in Lebanese schools.
In 2021-2022 fiscal year, $104 Million was spent on Basic Education and Literacy

During September, Rotarians in more than 46,000 clubs from 529 districts are encouraged to participate in one literacy project so as to further the mission which emphasizes the provision of quality education in its bid to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace.
