Meeting this week in WISCONSIN ROOM - Radisson Hotel
Dr. Heather Walder Associate Lecturer, UWL
Title: Collaborative, Community-Based Archaeology in Northern Wisconsin
Dr. Walder is the co-director of Gete Anishinaabe Izhichigewin (pronounced: geh-TAY anih-shi-NAH-bay iz-ICH-ee-geh-win) Community Archaeology Project, in collaboration with the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa's Tribal Historic Preservation Office. She will share stories and images of her recent archaeological investigations of a 5,000 year old village site in northern Wisconsin, where her project brings the past to life for tribal youth and community members.
Climbing, a traditionally outdoor experience, is exploding indoors via climbing clubs and gyms around the country, and is even popping up in sporting goods stores and on university campuses. Climbing has become an outlet for social activity and a new form of working out. Climbing is also now officially part of the 2020 Olympic Games.
Congratulations to all who achieved 100% attendance for 2018-19. Please review the list and if you feel you should be on it, contact Lyn at rotarylax@charter.net. On October 3rd we will recognize all members with 100% attendance and draw four names to receive a $25 gift card.
Benefits of sponsoring an ad on the Rotary Club of La Crosse web site: Enhance your business' public relations and image. Advertise an upcoming event. Opportunity to sponsor and support the Rotary Club of La Crosse and your community. Sharing with fellow Rotarians in our club and other local clubs who would like to know what you do.
Why advertise on the Rotary Club of La Crosse web site? The majority of visitors to our website are members and friends of our club. This makes our site's web sponsorship an ideal opportunity for small and large businesses to promote their products, services or an upcoming event in our community. Moreover 100% of the advertising revenue goes back to our club; this in turn supports the local community.
Cost is $20 per month up to $120 per year . . . . click here for form and more information. We will include your logo/link on our web site, send one email blast to all Rotarians and include an initial mention in our newsletter and on our Facebook page.
Click on the logos under Web Site Sponsors...located on right side of our home page and in each newsletter.
Rotary Youth Exchange A Step Toward WorldUnderstanding. The La Crosse area Rotary Clubs are looking for students who are interested in a unique experience of attending high school while living in another Rotary International country. Rotary International has a program which annually involves over 10,000 high school students living nearly a year in another country. Candidates must be sophomores to seniors in high school at the time of application and 16-18 1/2 years old when they leave for their assigned country. Applicants must rank in the upper half of their class.
How to apply. If you know of someone that is interested in this program for the 2020-21 school year, simply have them complete and return the application. Click here for application and more information. An informational meeting will be September 19, 2018, 6:30 pm at the Children's Museum, 207 5th Avenue, La Crosse. Our next STAR Meeting will be Thursday, September 12th. We will meet at the Radisson Hotel in the Wisconsin Room 3 at 7:00 a.m. Please RSVP if you will be attending to Lyn at rotarylax@charter.net.
ALL NEW members become a member of this committee for one year. This breakfast is hosted (no cost to the new members). The breakfast and presentation will last no longer than one hour and the meeting will count as a make-up. The STAR Committee, in addition to meeting other new members and some of the present membership will learn more about various aspects of the Club.
COME FOR SUPPER....The Humanitarian Committee will be helping again with the "Come for Supper Meal Program" at Our Savior's Lutheran Church - 612 Division Street on Tuesday, September 24th from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Click here to volunteer. Three more volunteers needed.
As our club continues to grow, it becomes more difficult to know your fellow Rotarians. Beyond the fellowship that we enjoy each Thursday and beyond committees on which you may serve, there may be activities or interests that you share with other members, but you simply haven't discovered that mutual bond.
Do you want to get to know some of your fellow Rotarians better? Find out which ones have the same interests that you do by taking 3 minutes to complete the survey linked below.
The 2018-19 Rotary Citation Winners Announced by RI...by PDG Bill Hoel.
The 2018-19 Rotary Citation winners were announced by RI in August. I know not all clubs go after this but pursuit does automatically lead to better engagement so encourage your Club's Leadership to consider it for 2019-20. All it takes is some simple data entry in Rotary Club Central. Happy to announce that we had three citation winners last year...club ranging from the big downtown La Crosse Club to an "upstart" like Fitchburg, Verona and a small, established club like DeForest. Just shows that anyone can do it! Consider following their example this year because a lot of clubs got awfully close as can be seen in the link below.
