With Lucia (our Rotary Youth exchange student from Spain) attending her first Rotary meeting with us last week, I would like for you to think of a way to spend some time with her this year.
Eva Marie and I have first-hand experience with the importance of Rotarians interacting with the exchange students. This week, we put our son Joel on the plane to France where he will spend a year in the Rotary Youth exchange program. Our sons Grant and Jared have returned from their Rotary Youth exchange in Japan and Germany, respectively. We have a good idea of what youth enjoy doing in foreign countries based on the stories that our boys have shared with us. In short, they enjoy almost everything. The list doesn’t have to be exciting, expensive or over the top. Our everyday life events are worth sharing. Going to the grocery store, visiting a farm, and walking through the International Friendship Gardens will be fun and make La Crosse feel like her home. Please make an effort to spend some time with Lucia. Based on stories we have heard from our boys, your efforts will be remembered for a lifetime.
This week’s fun video is a TED talk by Tim Urban who will give you some insight into procrastinators. The video is approximately 14 minute and has been viewed almost 22 million times.
This Thursday, Bob Masewicz will be giving his classification talk. Members always enjoy hearing about their fellow Rotarians.
Classification Talk: Some have described the classification talk as a talking business card. But it is so much more than that! You can share vital and interesting information about your family, your interest and your business. The talk is not meant to embarrass you, but to let us get to know you as you want us to. You are not expected to present yourself as a professional speaker. Most of us are not. Contact Andy Bakkum, Program Chair for the year if you would like to give your classification talk.
BBBS of the 7 Rivers Region has been bringing life-changing friendships to children in the coulee region since 1969. We started as a program that was run by La Crosse County until the early 1990s. In 1994 we became our own independent agency, BBBS of the Coulee Region. Through the 1990s we expanded our La Crosse area mentoring programs to include Sparta and West Salem. In 1999 a satellite office was opened in Winona and in 2002 we expanded to Trempealeau County. On January 1st, 2009 BBBS of the Coulee Region officially changed it’s name to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the 7 Rivers Region to better reflect the many communities we serve. In 2011 mentoring programs in Vernon County and Black River Falls were started. Today we serve several hundred children each year in both Wisconsin and Minnesota!
Accountability:by partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in the community we are accountable for each:
Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
Avoidance of risky behaviors
Educational success
Outcomes:National research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. By participating in our programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:
are more confident
are more likely to steer clear of drugs and alcohol

Why members are supporting this project....
I support "Growing Hearts Across the World" because...it combines support for the arts, promotion of our community, education about our sister city in Cameroon, a celebration of 100 years of local Rotary service, and on-the-ground support for the children of Kumbo. - Catherine Kolkmeier

Centennial Project Fundraiser - Growing Hearts Across the World.
Message from the Fundraising Committee: Lee Rasch, Kerstin Boudreau, Kenna Christians, Sue Durtsche, Mary Ann Gschwind, Chuck Hanson, Kathryn Sexauer, Mike Swenson, Jodi Widuch, Todd Restel, Katie Berkedal and Catherine Kolkmeier.
As you know, we are celebrating 100 years of Rotary service to our region with the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign. The campaign will culminate with the completion of the Cameroon Garden in Riverside Park in the summer of 2019. The Garden will honor the rich cultural traditions of Cameroon and provide a wonderful gathering place overlooking the area where the the “Three Rivers” meet. Most importantly, it will serve as a model for community and international service for the upcoming generations of Rotarians.
To date, we have received excellent support from Rotarians. But we have not yet heard from all of you. The next phase of the Growing Hearts Across the World campaign will be to the Seven Rivers Region community. It is very important to be able to state to the community at large that Rotarians are fully committed to Growing Hearts Across the World. Indeed, there is no better message than to state...every Rotarian in our Club contributed. We have asked members to consider a $100 contribution pledge for up to two years. However, your contribution at any level will count. Please complete a pledge card and include with your payment.
Please turn in your pledge cards and contributions to Earlamae Dahlby or send your contribution to Lyn Sheffer at P.O. Box 1914, La Crosse, WI 54602-1914.
One hundred years of service by Rotary has had a profound impact on the lives of many in our region and throughout the world. Come join us in celebrating this service...and help set the stage for generations of Rotarians in the years to come.
We have dedicated a page on our web site for our Centennial year to keep members updated on our project. Click here to view.

Inspiring Aquinas senior receives Youth Committee Community Service Award
We received a thank your from Elissa Nott...see note.
Elissa Nott, a senior at Aquinas High School, was honored at our meeting April 12 as this year's winner of the Rotary Club of La Crosse Youth Committee Community Service Award.
Elissa, the daughter of Steve and Charlotte Nott of Onalaska, was a Rotary Student of the Month in February 2017. She has been an extremely active participant in the Aquinas Interact Club, including serving this year as club president. Among many duties in that role, Elissa provided extraordinary leadership of the 2018 iFeed event as Aquinas was responsible for organizing the international food packing stations on the day of the event. Interact is just one of Elissa's many community service activities. She has been active in the Aquinas IMPACT organization, which encourages students to donate time for church and local charitable events, and has taken leadership roles with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Army Teen Panel, the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and the Fort McCoy Teen No-More Task Force, which provided first-of-its-kind education for youth on domestic abuse and sexual assault prevention.
"Growing up in a military family has motivated me to give back to others," Elissa wrote in her application essay. "My family, faith, and the many community service organizations I have observed and worked with, including Rotary, have guided and inspired me to give back to our nation and my community." Elissa plans to major in political science in college, with an interest in international relations, while also serving in the United States Marine Corps.
Club Member Rob Palmberg, who is one of Elissa's advisors for Rotary Interact at Aquinas, describes her as "efficient, detail-oriented, and extremely competent. ... She is a person of high character and integrity, as evidenced by her recently being named Chief Petty Officer for the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the highest rank a cadet can reach. She serves and impacts community in many profound ways!"
Elissa receives a $1,000 award to be used toward college expenses. This is the second year for the Club's Community Service Award, which is designed to recognize and encourage academic excellence, good citizenship and career development in youth.
Our club received the New Generations Award at our Avenues of Service Award Dinner for this Community Service Award.
