Last Week: Follow Up/January 11th Round Table Discussions
Following the January 11th Club Roundtable session, the
evaluations were collected and the comments were categorized by committee. The committees reviewed the comments and identified them by the following four recommended options:
Priority items to be considered for action as soon as possible
Priority items to be considered with additional planning needed
Items that should be referred for consideration in the next club Strategic Planning process (or deferred indefinitely).
Exemplary activities that we should continue (we don’t want to inadvertently neglect exemplary practices that are working well).
The board collected the committee recommendations and is processing the priority items with the goal of moving a number of them toward implementation in July 2024.
There are two areas that the board felt needed further dialogue among the members. Our roundtable discussions were based on the following topics:
Given the board decision to discontinue singing the song, America, should some activity take its place (sing another song, no singing, recite the Rotary Mission and/or Vision, other)?
How should we modify Rotarians in the News, and potentially Braggers & Squealers, and at the same time, maintain a fun atmosphere?”

Letter Carrier Food Collection Teams Needed Saturday, May 11th -
STILL LOOKING FOR 1 MORE TEAM!
Great Rivers United Way is helping out by recruiting driving teams, consisting of a driver and at least one passenger each, who will use a personal vehicle to collect donations on an assigned route(s) ahead of local Letter Carriers in La Crosse and Onalaska.
Drivers and their passenger(s) will report to the La Crosse Post Office, where they will receive materials and a route. Driving teams will follow mail routes, making two or more sweeps of that route to ensure as many donations as possible are picked up by volunteers, rather than Letter Carriers, who are also delivering mail this day. We estimate that driving teams will be done by 2:00 p.m. at the latest. This event is rain or shine.

News From Our Outbound Youth Exchange Student, Soren, in Belgium
“In terms of my exchange year, I'm pleased to report that the last eight months have been absolutely fantastic. I moved in with my third and final host family around three weeks ago, and have had a very easy transition into life with them…
I've also been profiting from rural Belgian roads and a warm winter to spend loads of time biking!… I've now attended two of the Monument bike races with one of these same cyclists and my host father – the Paris-Roubaix a few weeks ago, and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège yesterday.

It’s the last Week of RI’s Month of Maternal & Child’s Health
Nine Pacific countries have committed to greater protection for children against life threatening diseases by expanding their immunization program that has been implemented by UNICEF in collaboration with Ministries of Health and funding from Rotary since 2020. The commitment will see vaccines for Pneumococcal Disease, Rotavirus, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) added to the nations’ National Programs for Immunization. Rotary Project Director, James Allen, has been leading Rotary fundraising in Australia and New Zealand, and said, “Pacific countries are our near neighbors and we’re proud of the contribution we have made to protect children and adolescents in the region against life-threatening illnesses including pneumonia, diarrhea, and cervical cancer.”
In the Pacific, pneumonia and diarrhea are among the top three causes of mortality in children under five years of age, while around one-third of all pneumonia deaths are due to pneumococcal disease. Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhea in children aged less than five years. Severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration, particularly in young children, and if left untreated can be life-threatening. Since the Rotary ‘Give Every Child a Future’ project’s inception, it has supported the countries to strengthen the supply chain, including the cold chain system to ensure that every child has timely access to safe and potent vaccines. Rotary Project Director, James Allen, has been leading Rotary fundraising in Australia and New Zealand, and said, “… we’re proud of the contribution we have made to protect children and adolescents in the region against life-threatening illnesses including pneumonia, diarrhea, and cervical cancer.”
To date, fundraisers from Rotary have contributed US$3.9 million, through the project implemented by UNICEF, in cooperation with the nations’ Ministries of Health and supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. With a high burden of cervical cancer cases in the Pacific, most of which are attributed to HPV infection, the introduction of HPV Vaccine for adolescent girls will contribute to the reduction of preventable deaths. UNICEF will continue to support routine immunization programs in the Pacific island countries, through strengthening effective vaccine management practices, engaging communities to create vaccine
demand and the procurement and delivery of quality as well as effective vaccines at an affordable cost to the governments. UNICEF remains committed to ensuring that all children and adolescents have good health, well-being and reach their full potential.
