This week at Rotary we will welcome Peter J. Blum, Deputy Director of Admissions, Recruitment and Community Relations - Challenge Academy.
The Wisconsin Challenge Academy is an alternative education program designed to reclaim the lives of at-risk youth and produce graduates with the values, skills, education and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults.
Last week our presenter wasLacie Ketelhut, Program Coordinator, Center for Effective Discipline. Program and Medical Director, Dr. Denyse Olson-Dorff: "No Hit Zone."
Lacie talked about "A No Hit Zone" environment that supports a culture of safety and health where: no adult shall hit another adult; no child shall hit an adult; no adult shall hit a child and a no child shall hit another child. Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center has created resources for those interested in becoming a No Hit Zone. These resources include implementation tools, staff training resources for community engagement and program materials.

Todd Restel, Chair of our 100th Anniversary Planning Committee is looking for your input.
Fellow Rotarians of the Rotary Club of La Crosse:
Click here for the PDF explaining where our club’s process stands today on identifying a Signature Project for our Club’s 100th anniversary. The first part of the memo describes what we have done to identify potential Signature Projects to date. My take away from the many committee, sub-committee and Board meetings is that there was broad consensus on the critical requirements that any project that we select must have.
While a specific project has not been agreed upon, the following items are critical to obtaining Club support:
The project must allow for active club participation by our members
The project must be highly visible, significant and have a long useful life. If the project is not a capital asset or improvement, then the project must have a long term sustainability plan.
Rotary recognition needs to be prominent and clearly identified
Rotary needs to be able to provide direction and influence to the project
Fundraising for this project is expected
Completion date needs to closely coincide with our club’s 100th anniversary date which is June 1, 2019.
To date, the attached PDF contains potential projects that have been sent to me, most of which have been discussed in various amounts of details. As of today, only one of these (in my opinion) meets the six requirements listed above.
Here is what I need from you keeping in mind that I want to bring this to our Club’s Board of Directors meeting on Monday, April 10th. If you have other projects in mind, please send that information to me and be sure to include how it matches up with the requirements above. If you submitted one of the listed projects in the PDF and feel that the project does meet the six critical requirements, then send me your write up. I will compile all of the additional projects and then bring the results to the Centennial Committee and the Club’s Board. I am also looking for opinions, suggestions and commentary on the projects listed in the PDF. At the end of this process, the project(s) will be presented to the entire Club.
If you have comments that you don’t want to make in writing or just want to talk, please call me. My cell phone is the easiest way to reach me.
Thank you in advance. Lastly, if you want to be directly involved in the process by joining the Centennial Committee or any of the sub-committees, please let me know. ALL are welcome.
Here we are in one of the Delhi slums at a free clinic. Children were waiting to get their drops. Whereas we get one dose, they get as many as 25 over a five year period. Why? Because if they have any intestinal issues, the dose can't replicate in their stomach in time for the body to trigger the immune system. After each dose, and we did 210 vaccinations today, the child gets his/her pinkie finger painted purple. We had a couple of kids come back to get the drops again just be cause they were so intrigued to see the western foreigners. Mothers thanked us. All the children were gorgeous. All smiling and anxious to practice their English.

District Governor Dean McHugh invites you to the 6250 District Conference in La Crosse on May 12-14, 2017
Rotary International President John Germ has encouraged us this year to be "Rotary Serving Humanity". As I visited the 63 clubs in District 6250, I have seen evidence in every club where we are living up to this, both locally and internationally. Even more powerful, we are working together with our friends as we make meaningful differences in the lives of others.
I encourage you to celebrate Rotary friendship and Rotary progress with your fellow Rotarians in La Crosse. At District Conference 2017 we will learn about some of the outstanding projects happening as a result of the efforts of our District's clubs and assistance from The Rotary Foundation. We will have opportunity to learn more about specific Rotary roles and programs at District Assembly and at workshops. We will hear from several young people whose lives have been changed forever by Rotary Youth programs. We will hear inspiring messages about service and philanthropy from Rotarian and non Rotarian keynote speakers. Probably most important of all, we will meet and talk with Rotarians from all around our District, taking home new ideas to improve our clubs.
Join me in La Crosse to renew old friendships and make new ones in Rotary. May Rotary friends and Rotary ways continue to help us serve.
