This week our presenter will be from the UW Extension. University of Wisconsin-Extension provides statewide access to university resources and research so the people of Wisconsin can learn, grow and succeed at all stages of life. UW-Extension carries out this tradition of the Wisconsin Idea – extending the boundaries of the university to the boundaries of the state – through its four divisions of continuing education, cooperative extension, business and entrepreneurship, and broadcast and media innovations.

Our program last week was the AVID college-readiness program. They are closing in on the first full year of the new AVID college-readiness program at Central and Logan high schools. The Advancement Via Individual Determination program teaches critical thinking and other skills key to succeeding in college. The three-year implementation plan for AVID is being supported through major grants and other community fundraising by the La Crosse Public Education Foundation (LPEF).   More about AVID...check out their web site.

COME FOR SUPPER....The Humanitarian Committee will be helping again with the "Come for Supper Meal Program" at Our Savior's Lutheran Church - 612 Division Street on Tuesday, May 26th from 4:30-6:00 p.m.  Click here to volunteer. We need four more volunteers.

What does Give Polio The Finger mean?

Purple ink on the pinkie finger tells both volunteers and the child’s neighborhood that one more person is safe from the horror of polio.

It is more than a way to identify who has been immunized. It is a symbol of defiance against a crippling disease and a symbol of hope for a polio free world. No one is safe until all are safe. End Polio Now. Polio has been reduced by 99%. We are closer than ever to ending this crippling disease forever. For as little as 60 cents, a child can be vaccinated against polio for life.
