FRUIT BASKETS AND ROTARY LIGHTS
Rotary Lights: Rotary Lights is an annual gift to the Coulee Region as a cooperative effort among the area's Rotary Clubs, numerous other non-profit groups and volunteer organizations, sponsors, and last but not least - the amazing individuals that make up their Steering Committee and Board.  This year Rotary Lights in Riverside Park will be from November 24th through December 31st.  Would you or your business like to be a sponsor of Rotary Lights?  The Sponsorship levels range from $100 to $5,000...Sponsorship Levels and Benefits You can send your check to Rotary Lights: PO Box 2151, La Crosse WI  54602-2151.

It is time to VOLUNTEER to help out at Rotary Lights.  Our club will again be there for opening night..Friday, November 24th..we have two shits...4:30-7:30 and 7:30-10:20.    We need a minimum of 25 for the first shift and 20 for the second shift.   Click here to volunteer.

Fruit Baskets:  Our annual Fruit Basket Fundraiser is only weeks away.  We will be taking orders for fruit baskets starting in October......for delivery on Saturday, December 9th and Monday, December 11th.  Think Holiday Gift giving ....they make great employee gifts....see if your employer would be interested in supporting our fruit basket sale.   We will be making a slight change to the baskets this year....NO grapefruit.  We will increase the oranges and get another variety of apples.

ORDER FORMS ARE NOW AVAILABLE AT ROTARY

Volunteer to help at the Fruit Basket Fundraiser.
We will  assemble baskets at the Rotary Light House, 27 Market Street, La Crosse on Saturday, December 9th.  We will need a crew for set-up, basket assembly and basket delivery on Saturday.  On Monday, December 11th we will need members to deliver baskets.

“Best of all possible worlds” says co-chair David Amborn, “members lend a hand with assembly or delivery and then take their personal baskets home with them. It’s beneficial to all concerned.”

WARM FEET, WARM HEARTS
From our Humanitarian Committee:

Just a quick update on our Humanitarian Committee's 2017 project "Warm Feet, Warm Hearts."

Sheila got in touch with her contact at Catholic Charities and they confirmed they are looking for all sizes of socks and sweatshirts (socks are especially needed) and for as many as can be collected.

Wettsteins has agreed to donate refrigerator boxes that can be used for the collections. Would someone like to volunteer to pick them up, cut them down as needed, wrap them so they look more attractive than plain refrigerator boxes, then drop them off either at Rotary for storage at the Radisson Center, or with Sheila at La Crosse Monument? I suspect we will need 3 boxes - two for placing at Rotary meetings and one "main" one to store everything in between collections. Let me know if you'd like to take this on and I'll give you the contact information at Wettsteins.

I emailed all of the La Crosse Rotary club presidents yesterday to ask for their participation, and so far have heard back from two:

Rotary East would like to participate. We need someone from the committee to volunteer to attend their October 30th Noon meeting at Piggy's to make an announcement about the project, and pass out fliers (attached - I'm checking with Lyn about getting these printed). Then, we'll need someone to coordinate with their president Spencer (Spencer.niebur@gmail.com) to drop off and pick up the donation box for their Nov 6 & 13th meetings. Please let me know if you'd like to take this on.

Hilltoppers would also like to participate. They are not having a regular meeting between now and our collection dates due to a special event, so they'll just be emailing their club members the information. However, we will need someone from our committee to volunteer to drop off the donation box at their Nov 8th Noon meeting and pick it up afterwards.
If the others agree, we will also need volunteers to attend these meetings to make announcements, and drop off/pick up the donation boxes:

Rotary After Hours

Oct 24 - 6-7 PM - announcement
Nov 14: 6-7 PM - collection

Feel free to email or call me if you have questions, ideas, or would like to volunteer for one of the tasks outlined above. Thank you!

YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT 2017-18
Our Youth Exchange Student for the 2017-18 year is Rebeca from Parana, Brazil.

We hope you will consider opening up your hearts and home to make Rebeca feel welcome. She will be staying at three host families while she is here however, we would love to have other Rotary families help make Rebeca feel at home in La Crosse.  Are you going to have a family gathering or attend a special event....ask Rebeca to join your family.  Your family will gain a new global perspective, many memories and quite possibly a new family member for life.

At little insight on Rebeca...she is a member of a Interact Club...she enjoys being part of something that serves humanity. She enjoys watching movies, reading books, taking pictures, meeting new places and going out with her family, usually at a park to play volley.   She intends to do an undergraduate course in cinema and work in film directing. She chose this path when she was in 9th grade while doing theater in school.

*****Just a reminder that if you will be one-on-one with Rebeca, you will need a background check.  This is done through the Rotary District site and our club will cover the cost.  Click here to process your background check.

COMMUNITY RESILIENCY SYMPOSIUM
DEAR FELLOW ROTARIAN,

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE LA CROSSE ECONOMY TO YOU?

You benefit from a resilient economy no matter whether you are in government, business, retired, or a resident of any age in the La Crosse area (i.e., the 7 Rivers Region); thus, I encourage you to attend the upcoming Community Resiliency Symposium devoted to the achieving and maintaining a strong, resilient economy on Thursday, November 9th, from 8 am to 12:30 pm at the Lunda Center, Western Technical College.

A resilient economy can withstand disruptive shocks to our environment and infrastructure such as those associated with globalization, flooding and climate change that can cause negative shifts in our economy.  To help meet these and other potential challenges, this half-day symposium will provide you with the opportunity to hear from three presenters who will address ways to achieve and maintain economic resiliency.  These presentations will be followed by guided table discussions and a Q&A panel.  Afterwards, you will enjoy lunch followed by your chance for input on your ideas through interactive polling and word mapping activities.

This event builds upon last year’s symposium on regional resiliency but it will also dig deeper into the economic component and how economic resilience can address both environmental stewardship and social equity.

Join us for presentations by:
Dennis Winters, Department of Workforce Development:  Dennis will explore regional interconnectedness as it relates to economic resilience by focusing on the overarching ramifications of Foxconn in Wisconsin.
Andrew Dane, SEH, Inc.:  Andrew will use case studies from projects in Wisconsin, including the 7 Rivers Region, to demonstrate how community members can work together to build economic resilience on neighborhood and community scales.
Joel Rogers, COWS: Taking the High Road in the Driftless Region:  Joel will emphasize the difference between “high” and “low” road approaches to economic policy at the state level, including the recent Foxconn legislation, and what this means for economic resilience in the 7 Rivers Region.

Please register by November 2nd online at: www.communityresiliency.eventbrite.com or by mailing a check to:   Sustainability Institute ITC 207-C, Western Technical College, 400 Seventh Street North, La Crosse, WI 54601 (click her for registration form for registering).

Please let me know if you plan on signing up so I can welcome you at this event!  This symposium will be worth your time!
