LAST WEEK AT ROTARY

Rotarian Richard Strauss made a presentation on "Reach Out and Read."

Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with clinicians to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. The program begins at the 6-month checkup and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in poverty. Ages 0-5 are the most critical for brain and language development, and parents and caregivers play a crucial role in their child’s development. Children who are read to at an early age develop a lifetime love of books and learning. There's no app that replaces your lap.  For more information visit their web site.   PowerPoint Presentation.

As I mentioned last Thursday, half the proceeds from the Thursday, June 1, Loggers vs. Mankato Moondogs game will benefit Reach Out and Read (ROR) Wisconsin, the literacy promotion program celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.  The first ROR site in Wisconsin (the 50th in the nation) was in La Crosse, and now, 20 years later, there are almost 200 sites in Wisconsin and 6000 in the US.  ROR has three main components, all of which take place in medical offices where children have well-child visits:  a reading-friendly waiting area without TV, promotion of library cards, and a supply of slightly used books which can be taken home; developmental advice and counseling by doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants during the well-child visit; and the donation of a new, developmentally appropriate book to the child.  With up to ten well-child visits from six months to five years of age, ROR provides ten books to build or add to a child's home library.

For the maintenance of the 193 ROR sites in Wisconsin (and development of the 30 in the application phase), there are two administrators and one office.  For those 30 sites in application (and many more to follow) to become ROR sites, more program administrators will be needed.  ROR's expenses include administrators' salaries and book purchases (most books are bought for $2).  There is no funding from the state government or the federal government for ROR.

Please consider buying tickets for the June 1 game to benefit ROR Wisconsin (which in turn will benefit local ROR sites).  To do so, call me at 769-8920.  I'll collect money for the tickets, and the tickets will be available at game time at a table by the ballpark entrance.  Thanks very much.
