Last week, I hope you were able to spend time with your family and friends as you celebrated Thanksgiving. Our members are fortunate to have so many things about which we can be thankful. During the next several weeks, we have several opportunities for involvement in the community, including helping out with our largest fund raiser – “fruit baskets”, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, getting involved with some newly created fellowship groups, delivering meals for ‘Meals on Wheels’, serving meals for ‘Come to Supper, and many more. Participation in these events creates great opportunities to get to know you fellow Rotarians outside of our Thursday afternoon meetings.
Don’t forget that Tuesday, November 27th is “Giving Tuesday.” Obviously, Rotary would like to be your charity of choice for giving and backs up their mission with the highest rating possible of four stars from the independent evaluator Charity Navigator. However, we all know that there are many groups in need, many of which are in our local community. If you have time to help, to volunteer and/or to give, create the time this month to make a difference.
Instead of videos this week, I am posting two articles. This first selection received accolades from club member Bill Hoel. The article is titled “What if the Placebo Effect Isn’t a Trick?” To quote Bill, the article “is fairly lengthy, but heck of an interesting read.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/07/magazine/placebo-effect-medicine.html
Our members support these foundations by their individual donations. Last year our members donated $22,000 to Rotary International Foundation.$10,500 to PolioPlus and $23,000 to Rotary Works. You heard how your donations make a difference in our community and the world. Our all time giving to Rotary International is $714,500.
Sue Durtsche spoke about becoming a Paul Harris Fellow and matching foundation points. Those that donate to the Rotary International Foundation - Annual or PolioPlus funds - will receive a Paul Harris Fellow award when they have donated $1,000. Every dollar you donate after the $1,000 you will also receive a matching foundation point. Once you reach another $1,000 level you will be a PH+1 AND you will have 1000 points to designate/honor someone of your choice as a Paul Harris Fellow. They do not have to be a Rotarian to receive the award.
Lindy Saline, Sue Durtsche's father who passed away was a member of our club and a supporter of the Rotary Foundations. He has left 10,000 points and Sue has contacted Rotary International and they will allow us to use these foundation points. We will match your donation of $100 or more to Rotary International Foundation - Annual or PolioPlus fund through February 2019. An example is, if you donate $500 we will match that with 500 points and you will receive a Paul Harris Fellow. If you are interested, please contact Lyn for more information. We know Lindy would be proud to know his points are creating another $10,000 to support the Rotary International Foundation.

I am sending this in response to a tragedy. You have all heard about the horrendous wildfires that have done such damage in California. Perhaps no spot was more devastated than the town of Paradise. This town of 25,000 has a Rotary Club.
That Rotary Club has a foundation. So the means to donate funds that will get through to Rotarians in Paradise exists. Our District Charitable Trust has established an account for donations to the Paradise Rotary Foundation.
If you wish to make a donation to this cause, you can do so in any of the following ways:
1) Check made payable to “ The Rotary District 6250 Charitable Trust” and send to c/o Treasurer Bob Trussoni at : 907 Martin Drive Marshfield, WI 54449
2) Credit Card payments: Online with PayPal. To do this, go to this page on our District web site, and click on the Donate link:
Please indicate that your donation is for the Paradise Fire Relief Fund in the memo section of your check or PayPal payment so it will be credited to the right account.
Paradise is an active Rotary club. The immediate Past President is the City Manager. Big thanks to Lyn Kenny of Madison South Rotary, who has friends in California, for alerting us to this need and opportunity.
